The words ‘ancient paths’ have fascinated me for several years. They bring to mind the biblical title for God, ‘Ancient of Days’ as found in Daniel 7:9 which refers to the eternality of God, an attribute unique only to the Lord as the Supreme Being or Ancient of Days.
Daniel 7:9 states, “As I looked, thrones were placed, and the Ancient of Days took his seat; his clothing was white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool; his throne was fiery flames; its wheels were burning fire.” This Ancient of Days sat on a throne as king. He wore bright white clothing and had hair like wool, symbolizing the purity of the Lord. The fire likely symbolized purity and judgment. The wheels may also refer to His power and ability to move in any direction He pleases.
So in Jeremiah 6:16 the LORD God says (we should pay attention when God speaks) : “Stand by the roads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls. But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.’
Our word for today is: Ask God to show you His ancient paths, where the good way of living life is. Then when you find it – walk in it. It really is quite simple.
My question for you, brother or sister – have you truly found an ancient path where the good way is?
Possibly you think yoga is the good way since it is ‘ancient’, but is it a sincerely good way that provides deep peace (abiding rest) for your soul?
Maybe your thing is Eastern religion … or New Age … or … no religion at all.
But please be warned. If you are not walking the ancient path forged thousands of years ago by the Hebrew prophets, you run the risk of sharing the same fate of those who the Old Testament prophet Jeremiah addressed. They told the prophet, “We will not walk in the ways of your God, Ancient of Days.”
I won’t tell you what happened to these people.
But I will tell you this: I have walked the ancient path of biblical Christian wisdom as a lifestyle since 1978 (37 years). Not as a religious exercise, but as a committed, dedicated follower intent on authentically living out God’s instructions as part of my daily life. I can say without reservation, His ancient path IS THE GOOD WAY which repeatedly provides rest for my frazzled soul. We can argue philosophy but my personal experience can never be shaken or taken.
May His Holy Spirit lead you to personally encounter the Ancient of Days yourself. I promise you will never be the same, once your eyes have beheld His kindness and His love for you – in the exact state you are in as you read this (jammies, unwashed hair, bad habits and sins that repeatedly trip you up). Shalom!
